Chaos at the Capitol

The insurrection at the capitol was the first of its kind and ultimately could lead to Trump being impeached by both the house and senate.

The reason for the raid on the Capitol was because a select group did not want Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in office. So to ‘prevent this’ they wanted to disrupt and ultimately stop the counting of the electoral college votes. Even with the insertion, Congress had to finish their obligations into the afternoon. Joe Biden won the electoral college votes.

“We are going to walk down to the Capitol! And we are going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women. And we probably are not going to be cheering so much for some of them… because you’ll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength and you have to be strong.” Trump had rallied up the raiders before the act of violence on the Capitol.

People who were in the Capitol building when the insurrection started, had to go into immediate lockdown. The raiders risked the lives of people in the capital, by potentially giving them COVID-19 and threatening their lives.

The security at the Capitol was light and the national guard took a long time to arrive at the Capitol because they needed the approval to do so.

Other government officials look at this event with dismay and horror. The U.S. National Security Adviser, Robert O’Brien, later said his opinion on the matter, “What the mob did to our Senate Chamber today was an utter disgrace.”

Many things were knocked over and destroyed inside the Capitol building by the raiders like documents and windows. With the lack of security available, they tried to tame the surge of raiders but many got through. Security guards kept saying things like ‘get back’ but many of the raiders did not listen. A woman was shot and killed due to the utter confusion and chaos of the event. Steven Stund, the chief of police, addressed the incident by writing a statement publicly,

“As protesters were forcing their way toward the House Chamber where Members of Congress were sheltering in place, a sworn USCP employee discharged their service weapon, striking an adult female.  Medical assistance was rendered immediately, and the female was transported to the hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.  She has been identified as Ashli Babbitt.”

Trump has now been impeached twice by the House of Representatives but they also need the senate’s final decision for him to be fully removed or convicted. If Trump becomes impeached from both the Senate and the House, he will no longer be able to hold any office including the 2024 election.

The house’s votes for Trump’s impeachment were 223 to 205. The trial for the Senate will begin on February 9th and end about 2 weeks later. If the Senate votes for him to be impeached, he will be the first former president to be impeached by both the House and the Senate. Trump will set the precedent for or future presidents that may be impeached and affect Trump’s life and family forevermore.

Both sides of Trump and the raiders are in the wrong when it comes to this. Trump incited such violence on the Capitol but the raiders in their actions inflicted violence in the Capitol.
