Boys’ Basketball moves on

The night of Feb. 23 was a crucial victory for the Aztec boys varsity basketball team. The Aztecs defeated the Jaguars of Desert Ridge,74-43, in the first playoff game of the season.

The starters of the game were freshman Casey Benson, juniors Calaen Robinson and Avery Moss, and seniors Nick Siefker and Michael Miller. The first quarter was back and forth, but by the end of the quarter the Aztecs were up by two.

In the second quarter Robinson had six straight points, which gave him 22 points by the end of the night. Senior Rashidi Kabamba added seven straight points of his own. Miller also had a good quarter

“Mike (Miller) threw Desert Ridges best player off his game with good defense,” Moss said.

Junior Andrus Peat stepped up in the place of Moss due to an injury.

The crowd was loud and was a crucial part for the attitude toward the game.

“We appreciate the crowd and what they do for us,” Kabamba said.

The team went home tonight with a victory. The Aztecs, No.5 seed in the tournament play, No.4 Mountain View Saturday, Feb. 26, in the second playoff game of the season.

“This game is like a war,” Moss said.

“It’s our next step,” Robinson added.

This game is all or nothing for the Aztecs. If they win this game they are moving on to the state semifinals against the winner of No.1 Buena Versus No.9 Desert Vista.

“This will be a tough game, but we worked hard and prepared ourselves for this time,” Benson said.
