The Aztecs had several outstanding performances at this years’ state meet.

Overall, the boys’ team took fifth place with 42 points. Seniors Matt Whitlatch and Garrett Baker-Slama each made significant contributions to this total. Whitlatch took first in the two-mile, third in the mile and led the 4×8 and 4×4 teams to second-place finishes. Baker-Slama added even more points for the team by taking second in the two-mile, mile and 4×8.

“We were really happy with how the meet went,” Baker-Slama said. “It felt like all of our hard was finally worth it.”

The girls’ team also had an impressive finish to the year. The Aztecs took seventh overall with a total of 29 points. Most notably, sophomore Dana McKenzie placed second in the high jump and senior Briana Vaifale took third in discus. These were very important contributions as Basha’s team finished just one point behind the Aztecs.

“We gave it our best effort and I think it paid off,” senior Danica Ganje said. “It was a good way to end the year.”

Some students are planning to continue their track careers in college. Although it is difficult to get a scholarship, several Corona athletes are still planning to further pursue their careers.

“I am going to continue running at Paradise Valley Community College,” Whitlatch said. “It’s a really exciting opportunity, so I’m going to try to make the most of it.”

The future of Corona’s track teams also seems promising. Even though there are some talented seniors who will be graduating, the teams will still have plenty of talented, experienced athletes capable of filling leadership roles.
