Aztecs continue season

We’re six weeks into the season and the varsity girl’s basketball team has a record of 5 wins and 11 losses. The games haven’t really been close, as 14 out of the 16 games have had a point differential of at least 8 points, and 6 of those games have had a point differential of over 20. Their biggest win of the season was an 11-point victory at home against 11-5 Desert Ridge.

Senior forward Sydney Vanda is the leading scorer for the Aztecs, averaging 15.1 points per contest on 40% field goal percentage. Freshman guard Alexa Hogberg is averaging 9.3 points per game to go along with her team-leading 5.4 assists per game along with an impressive 48% percentage from beyond the arc. The team is getting good ball rotation, with 8 players averaging about 1 assist a game to go along with Hogberg’s 5.4.

Defensively, Corona continues to impress. Junior forward Sarah Rueckle is averaging an outstanding 3.8 blocks per game. Hogberg leads the team with 2.1 steals per game, but is closely followed by Junior forward Allison Gordon, who is averaging 1.4 steals per game. Senior forward Allison Gordon is leading the team with 6.6 rebounds per game while 3 other players (Vanda, Rueckle, and Senior forward Cecilia Yocham) are also averaging over 5 rebounds per contest.

Corona plays best at home, with a 2-2 record at home. On neutral courts the team is 3-5, but still has yet to win a game on the road with an 0-4 away record. Their latest game was an 88 to 31 loss at home against Chandler, and is really starting to miss star point guard Alexa Hogberg, who has
