Corona del Sol High School lost their Homecoming football game against the Mesquite Wildcats, on Friday, Sept. 18. Corona, now 1-3 on the season, lost 19-14.
Corona was trailing the Wildcats the whole night and did not play to its full potential.
“We just need to make the big plays when we have the chance,” middle linebacker and tight end Kyle Benson said. “As a team we need to be more aggressive.”
With five minutes left in the game, wide receiver Billy Johnson caught an 80-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Chase Cartwright to narrow the deficit to 19-14.
“Billy caught the pass and made a fantastic play,” Cartwright said. “We felt like we were right back in it.”
Less than two minutes later, Johnson intercepted a pass from Mesquite backup quarterback Tommy Trammell to give the Aztecs hope of winning their Homecoming game.
“I was really happy it happened, because it gave our offense a chance to win the game,” Johnson said.
Twenty-eight yards away, and the Aztecs would have the victory in their hands, but with a fourth and 2, Cartwright threw a pass to Benson who bobbled the pass and ended up dropping it with two minutes remaining in the game.
“Although we didn’t come away with a victory, we have made tremendous strides toward where we want to go as a football team and I expect that our progress will result in wins very soon,” Cartwright said.
The Aztecs have a tough season ahead of them with away games at Mountain View, Desert Vista, Basha and Highland, and one home game against Dobson.
“I’m looking forward to getting better every game as a team, winning the rest of our season, and making a run in the playoffs,” Johnson said.
