Girls’ volleyball held try-outs the first week of school, with approximately 55 girls trying out. The Corona volleyball program now has 42 girls all together.
“We will do very well this season. We have a team that’s willing to put in a lot of effort and time to get better,” returning varsity player Sydnie Lemieux said.
Sophomore Nicki Sawicki plays on the varsity team, and is also confident in this season.
“Our offense is what separates Coronas’ team from the other schools in the region,” Sawicki said.
Head Coach Ben Maxfield explained what he thinks separates his girls from the other competitors in the state.
“Cassie (Ronda) and Bethany (Jorgensen) are coming back; (they are) third year starters and two of the best outside hitters in the state,” he said.
Ronda is looking forward to her senior season and playing against Xavier which can be considered Corona volleyballs’ toughest competition. It has been this way for a long time.
“We’re excited to take on our old rival Xavier and to grow as a team as the season progresses,” Ronda said.
Coach Maxfield led the team to the state championship match last year, but the lady Aztecs lost to Xavier. The first match of the season was a rematch of last years’ championship and unfortunatley they lost.
