Summer school changes

As the school year ends, summer school begins, but this year with a few big changes.

The classes offered will remain the same, but instead of the usual summer school session of four weeks, Monday through Thursday, sessions have been condensed into three weeks, Monday through Friday.  Session dates have changed accordingly. First semester is now June 1 to June 18 and second semester is now June 21 to July 9.

“I signed up and didn’t know,” sophomore Shania Seamster said, “but I like it.”

The changes were instated without much controversy, but still without an official reason from the Tempe Union High School District administration. As far as the school knows, these changes will be permanent.  There are rumors that the change is being made to save on utilities.

“I don’t know why, we just got e-mailed that summer school had been changed,” said Corona guidance counselor, Marylee Fischer.

Fischer, who also serves as principal of summer school, said “I think it’s great, that students will be getting it in a more condensed time period, instead of being spread out across the summer”

However junior Katrina Farrell, a summer school veteran, points out a slight flaw.

“If you’re gone in June, it’s really hard to make the dates” Farrell said, “My sister wanted to go, but couldn’t because we’d be out of state.”

But for those who can make it, “It’s a great learning environment, because everyone is there by choice,” Fischer said.
