Apparel and Design 1-2 finished its Project Runway challenge after a three-week design and construction process.

The class breaks up into groups of four or five students and designs a dress they want to assemble. The class has three weeks to put the dress together before they go on display in the library.

“It’s great for them to see their ideas and sketches come to life,” teacher Diane Occhiuzzi said.

Occhiuzzi, who also has a part time job at Nordstrom, had fabric donated to her so her classes could use fine materials for their designs.

This year the class also created a men’s tuxedo that complements designs shown in the dresses.

Occhiuzzi encourages all students to take Apparel and Design, and explains that gender is not an issue in the fashion world.

“It’s a great way to express your creativity for your love of fashion,” Occhiuzzi said. “In the real world men still dominate the industry. We would love to have more men in the class.”

Occhiuzzi also believes her class gives students real life experience.

“This class not only teaches you how to design, but it teaches you how to present yourself,” she said.
