Three seniors at Corona del Sol High School, including Katie Culver, Katie O’Brien and Chase Cartwright, decided to host a flag football tournament to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

The flag football game was played at Hangar Park from 5-7 p.m. on Oct. 30 with a $5 entry fee.

“It was so fun and was for a great cause,” senior Kailey Whitney said. “And everyone played very well.”

Approximately 125 people showed up to participate in the single elimination tournament against the other 14 teams, and many parents watched from the sidelines. Many of the Aztec football players came to support the cause.

“I think it was a great idea getting everyone together to support such a good cause,” junior football player Kevin Zunino said. “It was very fun. It was like playing football on the playground in elementary school.”

Culver, O’Brien, and Cartwright created a tournament bracket, and the winners had the glory of calling themselves Football for Boobies champions. Among the winning team was Riley Calaen, Austin and Ryan Thibault, Sione Letoi, Chase Wilde, Tonya Charlton, and team captain Ben Hauber.

“We made shirts that said Football for Boobies,” Culver said. “They were sick and we sold them for $9.”

Anyone was welcome to participate in the tournament, even if you were in elementary school or in your eighties.

“It was cool how there were so many different people there,” Zunino said. “Some were more competitive than others, but everyone had a good time.”
