The Corona del Sol varsity football team will be sporting new jerseys as the Aztecs take on Desert Ridge Friday night.
Varsity quarterback Chase Cartwright conceived the idea to wear special commemorative jerseys in honor of the eighth anniversary of 9/11.
The jerseys, as well as other commemorative merchandise, will be sold to benefit the soldiers fighting overseas.
“It’s 9/11 and camo represents America and how we stood together on that day, just like the colors do on the uniform,” Cartwright said.
Corona alumnus Mike Pollack donated the uniforms with the help from local contributors, including Benson Systems, Dr. Matt Ceider, Orthopedic Surgical Oncology of Arizona and TDC Interiors.
The design consists of black pants and orange and gray camouflage jerseys with an American flag on the left shoulder. Below the flag is inscribed 9/11/09, to emphasize the importance and significance eight years after the attack on the country.
After the game has been played, the jerseys will be auctioned off. The proceeds raised from the auction will be donated to the Wounded Warriors Project. This organization helps in returning injured soldiers and getting their families get back on their feet at home.
“I chose this organization to tie the fundraiser into 9/11,” Coach Tim Kelly said. “Since everything was donated, all the proceeds will go directly to the cause.”
To help raise more money for the cause, the team has also ordered T-shirts and hats that the Touchdown Club will be selling at the game. The shirts and hats were also donated. This will help the team raise more money and enable them to make a larger contribution to the Wounded Warriors.
“It is extremely fulfilling to know that we’re helping people who have risked their lives to help and protect us,” Cartwright said. “We’re just doing the right thing by giving back to those who need it.”
If students are interested in having a 9/11 jersey of their own, coaches say that they may be ordering more jerseys to be sold with the proceeds still benefiting the Wounded Warriors Project.
