For the past 16 years, every year, the auditorium fills up to the brim in May for the biggest choir concert of the school year. The annual Pops concert is popular and unique because it only features modern music.
“It’s a lot more fun for the kids, and more entertaining for the audience,” said choir teacher, Greg Hebert.
The Pops concert will be on May 13, 14 and 15 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. The concert will feature all the choir classes, which are Men’s Chorus, Women’s Ensemble, Encore, A-cappella and the Jaztecs.
Tickets went on sale May 11, the Tuesday before the concert. Prices are $5 for students and $8 for adults.
“Tickets usually sellout, but sometimes people don’t show up, so you can buy tickets at the door,” senior choir student Mark Bingham said.
In fact, an entire section of the auditorium will be reserved for Corona students in the May 13 show.
This year’s theme is “Music of the 21st Century” and the name is Pops 2K (roman numeral 1000). The concert will feature music by Katy Perry, Green day and the Jonas Brothers.
Hebert chose all the group numbers, but students chose a substantial amount of the songs. In the months preparing for the concert, choir kids have auditioned songs with the only requirement being the songs had to fit the theme.
“We’re going to open with ‘Let’s get it started’ by the Black-Eyed Peas, which is a great opener,” said Hebert.
The concert will end with a big all-choir finale.
“It’s a big undertaking, it’s not just standing on choir risers and singing” Herbert said “We just take it to the next level.”
