CdS theatre works students performed A Chemical Imbalance in the auditorium on Friday and Saturday, April 23-24.

The play was a humorous story that used characters and ideas from the book The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. In the book, Dr. Jekyll was able to change from a nice man to a purely evil Mr. Hyde.

Senior Daniel Crawford played Dr. Jekyll/ Mr. Hyde. He did quite a good job at making the audience laugh during his transitions from one person to the other as he made funny movements around the stage.

There were many incidents in the play where Jekyll’s changes came at perfect timing, as other characters were oblivious to his change.

Another character also assured the audience a good laugh. This was Lady Throckmortonshire played by senior Jeff Featherman. His loud high-pitched “lady” voice and his constant outbursts were quite a funny thing to see.

Later in the play Dr. Jekyll’s potion to turn him evil was left unattended as he told everyone it was grape juice. This lead to Lady Throckmortonshire drinking it and causing quite a funny seen as she chased Jekyll’s mother around seeming to be in love with her.

One thing in the play, however, I was not too impressed with was the accents. The play was to be a British comedy and the accents were British, but some were not too authentic. I would not expect myself to do any better, and I can imagine that performing in such an accent takes a lot of practice and is very hard work.

Overall the play was great. Although some aspects of it were disappointing I loved it anyway. The audience laughed uncontrollably throughout the play, which showed that I was not the only one to enjoy it.
