I’m not going to lie and say that I wasn’t excited for the New Moon premier. In truth, I was more excited than any other movie premier I’ve wanted to attend. Although I was not completely satisfied with Twilight, the first movie adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s hit book series, I was hoping the change in directors would make a difference.
It did. After Chris Weitz was hired to direct the second movie in the series instead of Catherine Hardwicke, the director of Twilight, I became more and more excited to see the movie. I was definitely not disappointed in the least with New Moon.
For most Twilight fans, the first movie was disappointing because it was very different from the book. On the other hand, Weitz directed New Moon where it was a dead-on adaptation. The cinematography of New Moon was in my opinion more exciting than in Twilight. Some scenes contain filming where the camera pans in circles, which is quite annoying and almost nauseating, but it’s made up for with the filming during fight scenes, in which the action is captured in full.
Robert Pattinson (Edward) and Kristen Stewart (Bella) performed better in New Moon than in Twilight but whether it is because of the new director or just that Pattinson and Stewart have more experience and have followed through on media criticisms is difficult to tell. Taylor Lautner, who plays Jacob, is perfect for the role he plays. Although he is young and has not been in many productions, his acting skills were unbelievably professional. The rest of the actors in the movie performed well, correctly portraying the personalities of the characters they play, making the overall acting in the movie a success.
Another success in the movie is the soundtrack and score. Artists such as Band of Skulls, Muse and Death Cab for Cutie performed songs which seemed as if they were made for the movie. The score, composed by Alexandre Desplat, also captured the essence of the many themes in New Moon: romance, friendship, action and fantasy.
Overall, I felt that the New Moon movie was a complete success, after my slight disappointment of it’s prequel. Moviegoers can expect a perfect adaptation, jaw-dropping cinematography, edge-of-your-seat action, well-rehearsed and correctly portrayed acting, and an overall satisfying, sure-to-own production.
