Recently the CdS Robotics team took 10th place in a national competition that took place locally and seventh place in the elimination round at the 2012 Arizona Regional Rebound Rumble.

The team consisted of 20 members, who starting working and assembling their team in January. Robotics club members met every day for six weeks preparing for this competition. Placing 10th was a big accomplishment for the team.

“Teams from all over North and South America went to this tournament,” team member Daniel D’Souza said. “We did really well for the amount of people that competed.”

In their offseason, members of the Robotics club teach young children about the importance of science and technology, while also mentoring a group of young students who are interested in the science field.

“We worked diligently for a solid six weeks preparing for this competition, and it showed,” D’Souza said.

A team in the CdS Speech and debate club took third place earlier this semester in the yearly Speech and Debate ASU tournament. The tournament took place Jan 19-21. The same team won first at a competition at Central High School February 3-4. The state competition is at Mesquite High on March 16-17. Last year Corona took second in the state competition.

The speech and debate team at Corona is a club after school that meets on Thursdays. There are two types of debate: Policy and Lincoln Douglas (LD). The students prepare for competition for weeks. Students participating in speech and debate can either compete on a team of two or by themselves and can debate for either policy or LD. Policy debates are debates on world issues and economics, and LD debates are debates on morality issues.

“LD debate is pretty fun, its more philosophy based. It helps my logic and broadens my mind,” freshman Joseph Parks said.

The team that won third at ASU and first at Central High School this year is the policy varsity team. The policy varsity team consists of Nitin Gupta and Sumeet Patwardhan.

“Speech and Debate is a time commitment, but it’s fun,” said Gupta, who is president of Speech and Debate.

“Speech and Debate gives students a chance to demonstrate their mental abilities, but you have to be dedicated,” club sponsor and English teacher Kiel Warren said.

Half days are a rite of passage for many high school seniors. However, for the class of 2013, half days will no longer be allowed.

Next year’s seniors will be required to take a minimum of five classes, while underclassmen will still be required to take a minimum of six. This is a result of increased graduation requirements. The class of 2013 is the first class to need 23 credits for graduation.

“For every four classes a student takes it’s funded by the district, but the district requires five classes to act as a safety net to keep the classes, staff and students funded,” Principal Brent Brown explained. “It’s good that no matter what we’re constant,” Principal Brent Brown said. “It helps keep kids on campus and in the classroom.”

Unlike Corona, Gilbert High School and Chandler High School students must take a full schedule every year. Corona will offer one period of release to next year seniors.

Taking a full schedule gives students the opportunity to take classes that are required for college admissions. In the past, students were able to graduate in three to three-and-a-half years. Now, with the increase in credit requirements, students have less flexibility.

“I dislike it,” junior James Contes said. “I could have had a half day but now I have to take unnecessary classes.”

Rumors have been going around school that there is a paper shortage and teachers are being limited to only a certain number of copies.

“We have teachers using too much paper,” Principal Brent Brown said. “At the rate we’re going we’re going to run out before the end of the school year.”

For the rest of this school year, teachers have been allotted 6,000 copies, which is not only affecting the teachers but the students’ learning materials as well.

“If I had to figure it out I probably use 20,000 pieces throughout the year,” social studies teacher Teresa Hodge said.

Because of the paper restrictions given to them, teachers have to come up with new ways to get their information to their students.

“I have to email all of my chapter packets to my students for them to print out,” Hodge said. “Each one, I’d say, is probably seven to 12 pages.”

Now students have to find their own ways to print schoolwork that should be provided for them.

“Personally, I don’t like it (the shortage). I have to print out papers that I should get in class on my own paper,” junior Frankie Bui said.

However, students can’t really be expected to print out everything on their own.

“I’m not able to give them as much supplemental work,” Hodge said.

Not only do students have to print everything out themselves, but also now they are having to change their learning habits.

“It limits me in her class (Hodge’s APUSH class). I used to take notes on her packets in class, now I have to wait until I print them out. It’s harder for me to learn the information,” Bui said.

Even teachers who didn’t print out that many papers are changing the paper usage in their classes.

“In chemistry each student used to have their own copies for labs, but now there are only class copies,” Bui said. “In English, we don’t really get our own tests, it’s a class set and it makes it harder because you can’t mark your answers on it.”

Having students print out their own assignments isn’t solving the paper shortage since many students are going to the library in order to print them out.

“The kids I’m emailing now are going to waste more paper printing them out,” Hodge said.

However, for right now, students aren’t being targeted for the paper shortage, but soon paper will be limited for everyone.

“Students are not being affected and they can still print in the library,” librarian Brandy Walker said.

Next year, things will change even more, for not only teachers but students as well.

“Next year all schools will start off a program that tracks paper usage for both students and teachers,” Brown said.

It would be better for the teachers to use the copier rather than have the students use the printer. So accounts are going to be set up with a limit of printing for students as well.

“When students print they’ll be limited to a certain number of print jobs a week,” Campus Technology Director Andy Meyer said.

For now it has been decided that each student will be given 10 pages a week. Any pages not used in a week will rollover to continuous weeks.

“A student will be able to purchase more copies if they need it. It’ll probably be something like five cents a page,” Meyer said.

This program would be installed into the printers in the computer labs and the library. Desert Vista has been using this same program for more than a year.

“We currently have the program installed. First we’ll limit the amount of print jobs to the printers in the labs and the library,” Meyer said.

Many students may have complaints about this since they are being told to print many things that their teachers cannot.

“We will have to look at each situation differently and come up with a solution,” Meyer said.

The No. 1 Corona boys basketball team continues to move up in the playoffs for state. On Saturday, the Aztecs will host No. 16 Desert Mountain, which beat Boulder Creek 66-63 in overtime, in the second round of the playoffs. Game time is 7 p.m. Admission prices are $6 for students and $8 for adults; student athletic passes will not be accepted. Dress in all white because the theme of this game is white out.

If the Aztecs win the second round, they will proceed to the quarterfinals on Tuesday, Feb. 21 to face the winner of No. 8 Westview and No. 9 Brophy Prep. Game time is 7:45 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena. Ticket prices will increase to $8 for students and $10 for adults. The theme is a black out, so wear as much black as you can.

If Corona wins in the quarters, the semifinals will be held at Jobing.com Arena on Thursday, Feb. 23. Ticket prices will remain $8 for students and $10 for adults; it’s a yellow out, so go all out.

The Division 1 title game will be played Saturday, Feb. 25 at Jobing.com Arena at 4 p.m. If Corona fulfills expectations and plays for the state championship, support the Aztecs by wearing all orange attire for the orange out.

Tim Smith’s Competition Government class competes annually in the We the People competition. Students in the competition prepare for a pretend congressional hearing in which the students testify before a panel of volunteer attorneys, civic leaders and educators. On Dec. 3 the CdS team won district at Grand Canyon University. On Jan. 6, the team won the state competition against Hamilton. The team will be attending nationals in Washington, D.C, April 27 through May 1.

“I’m proud of the way everyone came together,” Smith said about his students.

The state competition was roughly about 10 hours. At nationals there will be multiple preliminary rounds and the last round is with the final remaining teams. The closest CdS has ever come to winning Nationals was in 1988 when the school won 3rd place.

Students in this class had to apply for a spot to get in; only seniors are allowed to be in the class. The class is split into 6 units of four or five people each. Each unit gets a number of questions that they have to study, answer and present at competition. Each unit gets a score and then the scores of all the units are added up for the overall team score.

“It is a great experience, you learn so much,” senior Hirsh Shah said.

Shah is in the Unit 4 group, which was the best performing group for the CdS team in the district competition. Even though the students are split into units they still have to function as a whole team.

“We are a very cohesive class. It’s fun and there is intellectual stimulation. It is a break from classes with students who only care about music and their cell phones. We actually care about the learning,” senior Courtney Naumann said.

To be in the class you have to be hardworking and show interest in the government. The skills you take out of the class are public speaking, composure and how to deal with high pressure. Librarian Justine Centanni and government teachers Lisa Adams and Smith are the sponsors of We the People.

“This year the class has kept the tradition of We the People alive by exemplifying a championship team,” Smith said.
