Looking for something fun to do, or need a cultural event to write up for a class? Here are some things you can do with friends this weekend.
Cityskate is located in downtown Phoenix and like the name implies, it’s a proper outdoor ice-skating rink. It’s only open for a few weeks in the wintertime, and it’s shutting down for the year after Sunday, Jan 8. There is a schedule for hours you can go skating that’s divided into increments between 2 to 3 hours. You can check the schedule at phxicerink.com. One session’s worth of skating costs $15.
For a cultural event
The Phoenix Art Museum is always hosting special exhibits, and there’s a couple interesting ones that are going to be removed soon. One exhibit is Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic. Phxart.org describes it as “portraying contemporary African American men and women using the conventions of traditional European portraiture.” The exhibit features over 60 paintings and sculptures and is being removed after this Sunday, Jan. 8.
Another current exhibit is Emphatics: Avangard Fashion 1963- 2013. Phxart.com calls it “a collection of fashions and accessories by renowned designers such as Alexander McQueen, Issey Miyake, Romeo Gigli, Alaia and Jean Paul Gaultier with original runway show invitations, videos and other materials and accessories.” It’s a multimedia exhibit that’ll be leaving the museum on Jan 16.
Good news: Admission is free on the first Friday of every month between 6 to 10 p.m., and this Jan. 6 is the first of the year. This weekend is the perfect occasion to take advantage of the free admission and visit the museum on N. Central Ave.
